Free citizenship practice test
Twenty questions, 45 minutes, 15 correct to pass: the same format as the real Canadian citizenship test. Free, with no account and no sign-up. The clock starts with your first answer.
The Oath of Citizenship
Which applicants must have adequate knowledge of English or French to become Canadian citizens?
How this compares with the real test
- The real test has 20 multiple-choice and true-or-false questions, all drawn from the official study guide, Discover Canada.
- You have 45 minutes, and you need 15 correct answers to pass.
- You take it online, in English or French. IRCC gives you a 30-day window and three chances to pass.
- This sample follows the same rules: no answers shown until you submit, and a 45-minute clock. Its questions are written from Discover Canada, one from each chapter before a second from any.
Getting the most from a practice test
- Take it cold first. A score before you study tells you which chapters to start with.
- Read every explanation afterwards, including for the ones you got right by guessing.
- Aim well past 15. A comfortable margin in practice is what survives nerves on the day.
Common questions
Are these the questions on the real test?
No one outside IRCC has those: IRCC does not publish its test questions. These are written from Discover Canada, the guide the real test is based on, and cover the same chapters in the same format.
Can I take the practice test again?
Yes, as often as you like. It is the same 20 questions each time, so for new ones use the free questions by chapter, or the full timed mock tests in the app.
Is it really free?
Yes. The sample test, the questions by chapter and the answer key need no account and no payment. The paid plans add more mock tests and the full question bank.
How long should I study before the real test?
It depends on how much time you have before your test date. The citizenship test timeline builds a study plan from that date, so you can see what fits.
Is the citizenship exam the same as the citizenship test?
Yes. IRCC calls it the citizenship test, and many people call it the citizenship exam. Either way it is one knowledge test: 20 questions, 45 minutes, 15 correct to pass. This practice exam follows the same format.
